Hydrodynamic effects of concentrational stratification in closed volumes
Abstract
In the present paper, the effects of nonuniform distribution of admixtures (concentrational stratification) in melts undergoing directional solidification in a field of mass forces at a specified Rayleigh number are studied by numerical simulation. Data on magnitude of this effect are obtained as a function of the Prandtl and Schmidt numbers and for various aspect and orientation ratios of the region with respect to the direction of the gravity force. In particular, the quantitative data obtained from the analysis are capable of explaining some macrosegregation phenomena under conditions of weightlessness.
