Relationship between atmospheric electricity and geomagnetic disturbances
Abstract
Relationship between atmospheric electricity variations and geomagnetic disturbances is analyzed on the basis of observational data obtained at Tiksi (1973) and Norilsk (1976). Changes in atmospheric electricity are shown to be closely related to the positive and negative geomagnetic bays. The observed relationship is attributed to the direct penetration of ionospheric electrostatic fields into the atmosphere and to variations in the atmospheric conductivity and electrosphere height. Thus, atmospheric electricity data can be used for the diagnostics of ionospheric electric fields.
