Wave number selection in convective cells
Abstract
Consideration is given to the problem of determining the period of the convective structures associated with Rayleigh-Benard instabilities at large Prandtl number. Model equations representing the appearance of the convective instabilities as a normal bifurcation are analyzed and it is found that the wave number of the steady solution depends critically on the boundary conditions at the sides.
