Coupled tropospheric mode analysis for a range dependent model
Abstract
Development of coupled mode theory to handle the transmission of microwaves over a two-dimensional model of the earth is presented. The refractive index structure of the earth is assumed to be a continuous function of both height and range; the effective surface admittance of the ground can be a function of range; and, the ground profile to be range dependent. The coupled equations for the mode amplitudes are derived without having to perform any questionable differentiations of semi-convergent mode expansions. At the same time some justification is provided for using the term-by-term differentiation process for analyzing microwave transmission in the troposphere over a smooth ground.
