Radiative transfer in dust clouds. I - Hot-centered clouds associated with regions of massive star formation
Abstract
A program has been developed which accurately integrates the equation of radiative transfer in a spherically symmetric dust cloud illuminated by a central star. It is found that a good approximation to the temperature distribution of the grains and to the emergent spectrum can be obtained by neglecting the effect of scattering except for the first scattering of the starlight; this approximation was used to investigate over 100 models for hot-centered clouds illuminated by a newly formed star. The emergent intensity profiles as a function of wavelength are shown for a number of models and compared with profiles observed for several clouds in the far infrared. Grains composed of neither graphite nor pure silicates with ice mantles can account for the far-IR spectra observed in hot-centered clouds without substantial enhancement of the far-IR absorption efficiency.
