Tidal forces in inhomogeneous cosmological models
Abstract
The tidal field is computed for the case where the larger group and its surroundings are modelled by an inhomogeneous TolmanBondi spherically symmetric dust (SSD) cosmological model. The tidal tensor (TT) in the Newtonian limit for any SSD system is considered, as is the TT for a spherical dust system in general relativity. In addition, tidal mass is defined via TT = angular factors x G x tidal mass/(r cubed). It is shown that tidal mass is not conserved and its evolution must be followed in order to perform calculations of tidal interactions in an expanding universe.
