Concerning the statistical distribution of rain rate
Abstract
The choice of statistical distribution for rain rate is considered with reference to the study of rain-related attenuation on microwave paths. It is shown that the log-normal distribution is suitable for low and medium rates, while the gamma distribution is suitable for high and very high rates. The gamma distribution should be used to calculate intense attenuation in the case of high rain rates. The parameters of the gamma distribution should be determined from measurements of rain rate greater than about 40 mm/h.
