Block companded coding for the digitizing of frequency division multiplexed signals
Abstract
The characteristics, quality objectives and proposed coding methods of frequency division multiplexed signals are discussed along with the application to a supermaster group (900 telephone channels) of block-companded coding. Attention is given to the availability of a linear coder of 11 bit definition for a sampling frequency greater than 8 MHz. Performances with and without transmission errors are theoretically analyzed and two laboratory models are described. In addition, the feasibility of a coding and digital multiplexing system of two supermaster groups in a gross bit rate of 139,264 kbit/s is considered.
