On the variation of the colour excess in the Carina-Crux-Centaurus-Norma region of the Milky Way
Abstract
For a material consisting of 2263 stars distributed over the Milky Way between l = 280 and l = 332 deg the average B - V color excess has been studied as a function of (uncorrected) distance modulus. The general impression is that although the color excess may vary considerably from one direction to another - even when the angular separation between those directions is very small - the average value for large regions seems to repeat fairly well from one region to another up to at least 1-1.5 kpc. It is concluded that average values of the color excess over regions of several square degrees shoud not be used for mapping the structure of interstellar dust clouds or for correcting stellar density functions.
