About the flux density distribution, the galactic distribution and the birthrate of pulsars .
Abstract
The large scale distribution of pulsars from the Molongolo survey is analyzed, and an attempt is made to reproduce the flux density, longitude and latitude distributions in the framework of a simple model. Within the model, the distribution of the intrinsic luminosity of pulsars in a given volume element can be parameterized by a power law; the spatial distribution is cylindrically symmetric, and the distribution in height above the galactic plane is Gaussian. The best fit of the flux density and the longitude distribution has been obtained with alpha equal to 1.7 and an exponential galactocentric distribution characteristic of young objects. It is estimated that one pulsar is created every 100 (-30, plus 60) yr., a pulsar birthrate consistent with the rate of supernovae explosions.
