Dynamical evolution of cluster models with a continuous stellar mass loss
Abstract
The dynamical evolution of a cluster model consisting of eight stellar groups was studied by means of the moment equations derived from the Boltzmann equation. The mass loss from evolved stars was taken into account following a numerical procedure which allowed for a continuous distribution of the star masses. The structural and dynamical properties of cluster models varied with continuity; at advanced ages they tended to approach the corresponding behavior of models without mass loss from stars. The formation of white dwarfs was considered; the corresponding star groups were found to segregate towards the cluster centre at a rate larger than that obtained in previous more simplistic computations. The moment equations are written in a general form suitable for models with a variable content of star groups.
