The expanding envelope of zeta Puppis : a detailed UV-line fit.
Abstract
An empirical stellar wind model of the Of star Zeta Puppis is obtained from the detailed fit of the observed UV resonance lines. In the line formation calculations, the exact equation of radiative transfer is solved iteratively in the co-moving frame. The method is extended to the treatment of line blends. An empirical velocity field is tailored, which explains the complicated details of the observed profiles. The derived ionization fractions are in excellent agreement with the 'warm wind model'. The electron temperature reaches 130,000 to 170,000 K and seems to increase with radius.
