An OH survey of Orion population stars.
Abstract
The paper reports on the observation of 21 Orion population stars. The stars selected were observed over a radial velocity interval of 160 km/sec, and it was found that these stars do not possess significant quantities of OH in their circumstellar shells or the physical properties of the stars are not such as to provide significant inversion of the OH ground-state transitions. However, OH emission of a different origin was detected in 10 stars: AS 501 was found to be a relatively strong main-line maser of the type associated with compact H II regions. It was demonstrated for other stars with detectable OH emission that it originates as a result of thermal excitation of OH in the extended clouds in which stars are located.
