On large scale structure in turbulent shear flows near the wall
Abstract
Experimental data on the mechanism of bursts within turbulent shear flows near solid walls are analyzed theoretically. Simple mathematical calculations with very restrictive assumptions produce theoretical predictions which are in good agreement with experimental results. It is suggested that more accurate interpretation of experimental results is necessary, particularly with respect to the effect of the measured skewness and flatness of the velocity components on the occurrence of bursts and on their relation to counterrotating streamwise vortex pairs.
