Recording techniques in the Fluid Physics Module - Present and future development
Abstract
The characteristics and performance of the Fluid Physics Module for Spacelab experiments are presented, with particular attention given to the flow visualization and recording systems. The module consists of a test chamber fitted with disk end plates which can rotate independently, a visualization subsystem, a cooling and liquid recovery system and a power and control electronics unit. External flow shape visualization is achieved by photographically recording the pattern of a high-intensity convergent light beam passed through the liquid column, while the flow field is visualized using solid tracers added to the liquid and recorded by a cinecamera viewing along the rotation axis. Preliminary flow visualizations obtained with the engineering model of the module are presented, and future improvements to the system are indicated.
