Digital technology in the PTARMIGAN switch
Abstract
A fully-digital, computer controlled switch installation system, named PTARMIGAN, that is employed as a tactical trunk communication system, is presented. The switch system can serve 500 duplex, digital channels and can be configured into a maximum of fifteen 16/32 channel, time multiplexed groups and a maximum of 16 single channel terminations. Attention is given to the design features which include data integrity, flexibility, survivability, and reliability. It is determined that stored program control with full digitalization has avoided the pitfalls and shortcomings of hybrid systems, and the resulting savings in whole life costs and greater operational simplicity are seen as significant advantages.
