A formalized mathematical evaluation of error in quantitative optical microscopy
Abstract
A mechanism for evaluating the errors in quantitative optical microscopy is presented. In computing the density and diameter measurements, to derive the total mass of a species, an assumption regarding the mean deviation is made. Employing the standard deviation of two, on either side of the mean, the range is calculated and taken as being four standard deviations across; a quarter of the range length then becomes the value assigned as one standard deviation. As a conclusion, an example is presented, calculating the described method, and suggestions for improving the accuracy of quantitative microscopic particulate analysis are noted.
