Autonomous star sensing and attitude estimation
Abstract
The paper presents a status report and recent results from a study of methods for onboard star pattern recognition and attitude estimation in near-real-time utilizing CCD array-type star sensors. Prototype algorithms have been developed to process the star image coordinates and conventional rate gyro output; a parallel processing division of computational labor is employed. The algorithms have been implemented on a laboratory microcomputer system which, on the basis of simulations, yields 10 arc-second precision in near-real-time.
