The ORNL prototype PDX neutral beam injection system
Abstract
To provide four neutral beam systems which can heat the PDX tokamak with 6 MW of 50 keV neutral particles in 500 msec pulses, it was required to increase the ion source size and component power handling capacity and to add a drift chamber cryopump to reduce reionization losses. The PDX neutral beam system parameters of the PLT, PDX, and ISX-B systems are compared; the PDX prototype system is fully operational and is used as a test bed for ion source development and the evaluation of the four ion sources to be used on PDX.
