Development of a marine mammal transmitter system
Abstract
A marine mammal transmitter package is being developed and tested by the National Marine Fisheries Service. The prototype device utilizes the RAMS positioning system of the Nimbus-6 satellite and eventually the ARGOS system. Operationally, the transmitter will have a design life of one year and will use a sea water switch to key transmissions. The package is configured to permit direct attachment to the dorsal fin area of a porpoise. Certification tests have been conducted with a RAMS simulator, and unit tests on a captive animal are scheduled during January 1979 in Hawaii.
