Quantitative visualizations, by video techniques, of recirculating flows in the hydrodynamic channel
Abstract
The paper discusses a new quantitative conception of flow visualization utilizing recent developments in video techniques, for which statistical treatment by computer is appropriate. Attention is given to the phenomenological modelization of mixture processes in various flow regions, and to the analysis of global characteristics of the mixture. Visualization using classical dye, bubble, and small particle techniques is applied to the recirculating flows encountered in aerodynamic studies of combustion chambers by hydraulic simulation. In addition, the residence time distribution function and the flow distribution, obtained by the treatment of video images, are used to construct a flow model by a combination of elementary reactors. It is found that a Eulerian point-by-point analysis of a mean field is preferable to a Lagrangian treatment which necessitates the memorization of numerous particle trajectories.
