Nuclear-pumped IR lasers using Ar 1, Kr 1, and Xe 1 transitions
Abstract
The aim of the present experiments was to find effective active media for lasers employing mixtures of inert gases excited by uranium fission fragments. Results obtained with binary mixtures of inert gases in proportions from 200:1 to 200:30 are discussed. Using He + Ar, He + Kr, Ar + Kr, He + Xe, Ar + Xe, and Kr + Xe, it proved possible to obtain laser action at wavelengths from 2 to 10 microns. For He + Ar and Kr + Xe mixtures, laser action was obtained in the range from 0.8 to 1.2 microns.
