Circuit-breaker arc physics: Plasmaphysical investigations of transient phenomena in gas-blast circuit-breaker arcs
Abstract
High voltage circuit breaker arcs were investigated in order to set up a computer simulation describing the performance of the breaker under various electrical loads. Inherent parameters were identified, and suitable measuring methods without expensive high power tests were delineated. The parameterization of long term interactions between switching arc, arc chamber, and gas flow were considered. Results indicate that the performance of modern high voltage circuit breakers can be simulated up to currents or 80 kA with sufficient accuracy.
