High energy X-ray observation of the X-ray binary 4U1700-37
Abstract
During a 54 hr balloon flight from Alice Springs, Australia, on November 22-24, 1978 the X-ray binary 4U1700-37/HD153919 was observed in the energy range 20-180 keV for about two hours on each of three consecutive days. During one observation when the source was in binary eclipse no X-rays were detected from the source region. Flare type variability was seen up to a factor of 25, on time scales of minutes to hours. The source shows a thermal bremsstrahlung spectrum with a temperature kT = 28 keV which does not change significantly during the outbursts. This behavior is discussed in terms of current models for the accretion onto nonmagnetic neutron stars.
