Heat pipes: Performance of capillary-driven design
Abstract
A method of calculating the maximum rate of heat transfer that a capillary driven heat pipe can sustain is provided as well as a method of calculating the actual rate of heat transfer with given thermal boundary conditions. Applications include rating calculations for heat pipes used in cooling systems or in air to air heat exchangers. The methods apply to tubular heat pipes that contain a single component working fluid and in which capillary forces drive the liquid flow in a wick structure.
