FAUST instrument - A high focal ratio telescope for far and near UV imagery
Abstract
A Wynne telescope (180-mm focal length and 1.12 aperture ratio) equipped with an image intensifier is selected to provide good sensitivity to both stellar and extended objects and to offer a wide variety of observations while making allowance for the constraints of space utilization. The general concept of the instrument is described, providing some detail on how mechanical structure and mounting of the detector satisfy the stability constraints. Finally, scientific performance, with emphasis on deep far UV survey application, methods of photometric calibration and examples of rocket flight results are presented. The instrument is now refurbished and adapted for the Spacelab I mission.
