Theory of the Isochronous Storage Ring Laser.
Abstract
The use of an isochronous storage ring as the electron source for a high power, high efficiency free electron laser is proposed. The conditions for the existence of such traps are defined and the dependence of their size and shape on the laser parameters and the deviations from isochronicity in the arc of the storage ring are characterized. The optimization of the laser parameters are discussed and numerical example of its performance is given assuming a design which can be realized in practice. The tolerances on the field strengths and the laser cavity length are derived and it is shown how they can be satisfied in a real facility.
