Guided wave acoustooptic devices for wideband real-time signal processing
Abstract
Two guided wave acoustooptic devices for wideband real-time signal processing along with a wideband anisotropic acoustooptic Bragg deflector in Y-cut Ti-diffused LiNbO3 waveguides are presented. In addition to the inherent wide bandwidth capability, these acoustooptic devices possess following novel features: (1) low cost, (2) light weight, (3) rugged structure, (4) low power consumption, and (5) optics aligned during the fabrication process. An overview on the fabrication techniques for optical waveguides and the guided wave modes in these waveguides is first presented, followed by an analysis of surface acoustic wave propagation and guided wave acoustooptic Bragg interaction. A description of the design and fabrication of interdigital transducers and the study of optimized guided wave anisotropic acoustooptic Bragg diffraction are presented.
