Collective interaction of a high-current ion beam with a plasma
Abstract
An experimental study of the interaction of a high-current ion beam with a plasma in a magnetic field at a current density of not less than 1000 A/sq cm and a beam energy of about 100,000 eV is reported. The results show the effective collisionless slowing of the beam, the transfer of a substantial fraction of the beam energy to plasma ions, and the acceleration of a group of ions to an energy much above the beam injection energy. These processes are correlated with the excitation of intense plasma waves and the formation of an ion beam discharge in the plasma.
