Observation of large 2.2 micron polarisation in 3C345
Abstract
Observations of the infrared polarization of the quasars 3C345 and 3C273 are reported. Linear polarization at 2.2 microns was measured with a chopper-coupled polarimeter at a 4-m telescope. The IR polarization of 3C345 is found to be about 20%, while 3C273 is observed to have a polarization no greater than 0.46%. The large IR polarization of 3C345 is noted to be much greater than its visual polarization, in contrast to all other extragalactic sources observed, and to comprise an additional area of similarity between quasars and BL Lac objects. Possible mechanisms of IR emission from 3C345 are discussed.
