The planets and their observation /2nd revised and enlarged edition/
Abstract
The nature of the planets of the solar system and their satellites is discussed, and observational projects and methods for amateur astronomers are examined. Following a brief introduction to the solar system and its members, methods used in the observation of the planets are discussed, including telescopic observation, photography, photometry, radiometry, spectroscopy, radio observations, radar and the use of interplanetary spacecraft. Results of the planetary studies are then presented concerning Mercury, Venus, Mars, the gas giant planets, Pluto, the planetary satellites and asteroids and the internal structure of the planets. Goals, subjects and methods for useful amateur observations of the various planets are discussed, and attention is given to treatment of data to obtain such parameters as orbital elements and planetary ephemerides, the phases of Venus, variations in the band structure of Jupiter, planetary maps, rotational periods and planetary brightnesses.
