The dynamics of interplanetary hydrogen
Abstract
Since measuring the Doppler broadening of the Lyman H alpha (LHA) line would enable an evaluation for the approach velocity of interstellar hydrogen as well as detection of any substantial quantity of fast hydrogen produced by charge exchange with solar wind protons, observations were made to determine whether the IUE spectrograph would provide sufficient dispersion to measure the profile of the fluorescent LHA radiation. An image with intensity up to 200 DN was obtained by a high resolution exposure over a period of six hours using both apertures. Since the difference in width between the high and low resolution images corresponds to approximately 0.1 A, it is not possible to determine whether this is an instrumental effect or due to Doppler broadening of the H alpha line.
