Multiphase versus single-phase choppers for DC electric vehicle drivers
Abstract
For a dc motor drive, it is shown that the significant weight reduction normally associated with increasing the number of phases of multiphase choppers is attained only at the expense of increased peak current rating of the power semiconductors. For equal peak currents in the power switching devices, the total weight actually increases as the number of phases increases.
