The evaluation of solar induced planetary waves at the 500 mb level
Abstract
The propagation of planetary waves with lowest zonal modes at the 500 mb level is investigated using several methods of wavenumber-frequency analysis. Wave spectra of travelling and standing waves are presented and their appearance around the rotation frequency of the sun f(0) equals 1/27.5 per day is discussed. It is ascertained that, although strong travelling waves near this frequency exist over a broad latitudinal band, they cannot be correlated to the solar rotation.
