Influence of a lateral boundary on thermal convection - Modulation of the amplitude of velocity of a convective rolls system
Abstract
In the present paper, the influence of lateral boundaries on the stability of a horizontal Boussinesq layer heated from below in the presence of gravity is deduced from the numerical integration of the conservation laws of a Boussinesq fluid. The model employed in the analysis is a simulated two-dimensional Benard apparatus (L/D equals 10), all four boundaries of which are rigid. The top and bottom sides are ideal heat conductors; no heat flux passes through the lateral boundaries. The correlation length obtained is in agreement with certain experimental values and which the values predicted by the Landau-Hopf model.
