Colour Index and Its Relation to the Magnitude Distribution of Meteors
Abstract
The color index of meteors and its dependence on magnitude are discussed, and the analytical relation of color index to the photographic and visual magnitude distribution of meteors is analyzed for the case of a linear dependence on magnitude. The relation is compared with the results of simultaneous observations of meteors through different color filters obtained at the Skalnate Pleso Observatory, as well as with photographic and visual observations from the Harvard Meteor Program. The results and their differences are discussed from the point of view of magnitude scales and possible selection effects. It is shown that the linear dependence of the color index on magnitude holds true at least for the photographic magnitude interval from -2 to +5, but the photographic and visual photometric systems used up to now for estimating the magnitudes of meteors are mutually incompatible.
