Diffuse radio emission in the Coma cluster of galaxies.
Abstract
Observations of the Coma cluster of galaxies (Abell 1656) have been made at 430 MHz with the 300-m radio telescope of the Arecibo Observatory. An area of sky approximately two degrees square surrounding the cluster center has been mapped. After the observed map has been corrected for the emission due to known point sources, the presence of a diffuse component with a maximum visible extent of 45 + or - 5 arcmin (20 + or - 5 arcmin to half maximum) and integrated flux density 4.5 + or - 1.0 Jy is confirmed. The observations indicate that if the relativistic electrons have diffused away from the central cluster radio galaxies, the bulk diffusion speed must be of the order of or greater than the ion sound speed and is much greater than the Alfven velocity.
