The "papillon" radio galaxy IC 708.
Abstract
Observations of the head-tail radio galaxy IC 708 with the Westerbork telescope at a wavelength of 6 cm are reported. The source exhibits a butterfly-shaped morphology, and linear polarization ranging up to nearly 35 percent is detected in the tail. A comparison with earlier results at 21 cm has been made to derive the distributions of spectral index, rotation measure, and depolarization. The source morphology is discussed in terms of the radio trail model and either the dynamical effects of a gradient in confining thermal pressure downstream of the galaxy (caused by either accretion by IC 708 or effects of stellar mass loss and ablation by the ram pressure of the intracluster medium) or changes in the output characteristics of the 'engine' in the IC 708 nucleus.
