Approximate formulae for electron scattering in a strong magnetic field.
Abstract
The character of the exact radiative transfer equation based on calculations by Boerner and Mezaros (1978) is examined and the correct series expansion and polarization average, up to second order, is presented. The main features of the differential and total Thomson cross sections in a strong magnetic field are discussed, providing expressions for the polarization change cross section as a function of the angle and the frequency. An example of the propagation of radiation in a strongly magnetized plasma is demonstrated employing a radiation beam for isotropic Thomson electron scattering without a magnetic field and with a constant intensity for all frequencies.
