Structure of a southern ring galaxy.
Abstract
The ring galaxy in Vela at 1008-3814 was investigated spectroscopically and by taking plates of different exposure time with the ESO 3.6 m telescope. It has an elliptical companion. It shows a pronounced double ring structure with a faint third ring. The rings are connected by bars, but the inner bar and the outer bar do not have the same orientation. The crossing time of the companion and the expansion time of the ring agree within the errors and indicate an age of 50-80 million years.
