Experimental investigation of the effect of hydrostatic pressure on strain gage applications and determination of correction values
Abstract
A number of strain gages were tested in Wheatstone bridge configurations on steel specimens in such a way that a test gage formed one half of the bridge and a compensation gage formed the other half, and the measurements were carried out under hydrostatic pressure that increased in steps of 100 bar up to 500 bar. Various combinations of strain gage type and adhesive material were tried. The compression of the strain gage under hydrostatic pressure is calculated in order to make a correction for the presence of the pressure. It was found that reliable measurements can be obtained under conditions of high hydrostatic pressure if the application is carried out with great care.
