Convective and surface instability of magnetic fluids
Abstract
The paper is concerned with (1) instability of mechanical equilibrium of nonisothermal magnetic fluids (convective instability), and (2) instability of equilibrium form of magnetic fluid layers with free surface (surface instability). Instability (1) causes convective motion in the fluid when caused by a thermomagnetic mechanism, and instability (2) results in a twisting of the free fluid surface in a uniform magnetic field. Analyses are carried out on the basis of the Navier-Stokes equations with the Maxwellian stress tensor for the electromagnetic field in the fluid in combination with the equations describing homogeneous incompressible nonconducting magnetic fluid with constant transfer coefficients.
