Air temperature and differential temperature measurement using IC temperature sensors
Abstract
The Portable Automated Mesonet (PAM) was developed for use as an automatic meteorological measurement system that collects data from an area up to 160 km in diameter by using a surface array of remote sampling stations. The desire arose in this connection to conduct also temperature profile measurements (differential temperature) for use in determining vertical heat flux in turbulent boundary layer studies. A differential temperature system is needed which can measure temperature at 1 m and 4 m above the surface and which can also be used in conjunction with the existing PAM system. A description is presented of aspects of sensor selection, sensor design, and sensor and system testing related to the implementation of the differential temperature system. An integrated circuit current-ratio temperature sensor was evaluated for possible employment in the considered system. It appears on the basis of laboratory tests that the sensor satisfies the system requirements.
