An improved portable instrument for continuous monitoring of ambient particulate concentrations
Abstract
The paper outlines the design features, operating principles, and capabilities of a portable instrument for continuous monitoring of ambient air. The instrument is based on the unique design of a particle charging chamber which is basically a cylindrically concentric ionization chamber whose center electrode is an alpha particle source of americium-241 which is covered with a gold foil. A second cylindrically concentric pair of electrodes, located between the charging chamber and the collection electrode, constitutes the mobility analysis chamber for determining particle size distributions. Initial testing results demonstrate that the prototype instrument can be effectively used for continuous monitoring of particulate concentrations and for obtaining particle size distributions in the submicrometer range.
