Photopolarimetry of scattering surfaces and their interpretation by computer model
Abstract
A basic understanding of the mechanisms which produce the observable polarimetric and photometric properties of rough surfaces makes it possible to interpret photopolarimetric data in terms of the properties of the surface material of celestial objects. Wolff's mathematical model of a dark, rough, surface was improved so as to more readily enable deduction of surface properties and the Widorn slope albedo rule was analyzed with a view to understanding its theoretical basis and placing it on a firmer ground of knowledge. Algorithms and other aids are provided for astronomers seeking to interpret photopolarimetry.
