Numerical and experimental antenna patterns of a space-fed planar phased-array antenna
Abstract
The illumination function and the far field radiation pattern of the space-fed antenna is considered. Numerical and experimental results, related to the performance of a planar, space-fed, phased array antenna of circular cross section, operating in the C-band (5.4 to 5.9 GHz) with some 850 radiating elements and 325 dummy elements (placed at the rim of the antenna), are presented. This antenna is referred to as the CAISSA antenna. A method to deal with the differences in phase correction pertaining to the different elements of the antenna and which originates from the free-space propagation of the wave emitted by the feeding horn is given. Further, the influence of the failure of a certain percentage of the phase shifters on the antenna pattern of the CAISSA antenna is illustrated experimentally.
