Section design for hydrofoil wings with flaps
Abstract
A section design method for hydrofoil wings with flaps has been developed. The method is based on the combined use of conformal mapping in profile design theory, and the panel method in profile analysis. Flap deflection is shown to have a significant effect on cavitation-inception which, in turn, may trigger early separation. Methods for avoiding or delaying cavitation-inception at the flap hinge line and foil leading edge are discussed. Examples are given for the case that the flap deflection has to compensate the vertical component of the surface wave motion in a seaway.
