A new phased array antenna intended for maritime satellite communication
Abstract
Chalmant, a Swedish L-band phased array antenna intended for maritime satellite communication, is described. The antenna, which possesses combined electronic and mechanical steering, consists of two panels, one of which is 15 degrees from the vertical plane, while the other is 10 degrees from the horizontal plane. Each panel has 8-by-8 circular polarized radiating elements which are fed in parallel through 64 single-path double-throw switches, 64 phase shifters, and power dividers. The beam is locked to the satellite at approximately 35 deg azimuth and 55 deg elevation. Total coverage is slightly more than a hemisphere. Components and electrical characteristics are described.
