Planetary encounters.
Abstract
This book provides a nontechnical account of plans and possibilities for planetary encounters by unmanned space probes. Early ideas about space travel are reviewed along with the development of rocket technology and early satellite and unmanned-probe launches. Detailed attention is given to the Mariner, Viking, Pioneer Jupiter, Pioneer Venus multiprobe, and Voyager spacecraft, as well as to test vehicles, launch vehicles, the Space Shuttle, and various craft considered for long-distance missions. Early observations of and unmanned probes (completed and proposed) to Mercury, Venus, the moon, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, the outer planets, the satellites of Jupiter, comets, and asteroids are described. Possibilities for sending unmanned probes beyond the orbit of Pluto, out of the solar system, and to other stars are discussed.
