Ocean energy unlimited
Abstract
An ocean swell and wave energy converter (OSWEC) is described. The converter utilizes the vertical component of wave or swell motion by means of a 'slinky' coil attached at one end to a stable structure and at the other end to a floating mechanism. Current is generated as the expanding or contracting coil passes through a magnetic field. Energy production obtained from oscillating coil and fixed coil OSWEC systems is determined, and a wave amplification OSWEC system is explained. It is suggested that a 3-megawatt OSWEC be combined with a 1-megawatt solar energy collection system in a 100-m-diameter complex.
